Common Features of Today’s Laptop Computer
Many components play a key role in how a computer performs, including the processor, memory, operating system, hard drive, and monitor. Laptop computers have additional features and considerations that are important. Considerably smaller than desktops, laptops require many components that are custom made to fit into their more diminutive platforms. This makes laptops unique from other computers, in that it is difficult to exchange parts between laptops and desktops, and replacement parts for laptops can be pricier than most. However, this disadvantage is greatly out measured by the speed, connectivity, and economical value that laptops possess over standard computer models.
CPU
A laptop’s processor, also known as the CPU or central processing unit, is responsible for processing information. Speed is the most important factor when choosing a processor, so pay attention to the processor's family, the number of cores, and the clock speed. Intel and AMD are the most prominent of processors; laptops frequently use Intel’s Core 2 and Pentium processors, or AMD’s Turion or Athlon technologies.
Processors with multiple cores can process more data at the same time. You can usually tell how many cores a processor has by looking at its name. Clock speed, measured in gigahertz or GHz, determines how quickly it can process information. The higher the clock speed, the faster the computer. Clock speeds typically range from 1.86 to 3GHz.
