Why does my USB port work with my flash drive but not the different mice I have tried?
I sent it back to Dell to get fixed. It doesn't work any better. I have tried 2 or 3 different mice (non-wireless notebook mice for my notebook). Should I try a wireless mouse? Any ideas? I am slightly desperate because it is hard for me to do an assignment I have without a mouse.
I don't speak computer-ese and do not understand the first answer at all.
Ok, none of that worked. I got a third mouse and it seems to be working. I tried everything possible. It was worth the $15 to have a mouse that works.
Windows XP will detect most mice but the ones it doesn't need their own drivers. Find the model of the mouse and look up a USB driver for it on driverguide.com
Also try rebooting the PC with the mouse plugged in, that will sometimes kick in the Plug and Play hardware detection services.
The guy above is talking about the computer BIOS. its a small program hard wired to your motherboard that allows you some control over the hardware functions of your computer. When you start up your computer it will say something like "press F2 to enter setup" or similar- could be a different key. If you press it you will enter BIOS. There will be a setting in there that disables a mouse. Could be that it is set to disabled but I would question why this was so, would have been done by the manufacture.
Have a look around it and see what you can find but make sure you don't change anything else and if you do by accident then be sure you don't save the settings.
