Why does my 160 gig 7200 RPM notebook hard drive only show total 146 gigs in my system settings?
I'm running Microsoft Vista on 4 gigs of RAM and a 32 bit system.....The hard drive is partitioned to two drives: C=136 gigs, D=10 gigs ...but this only comes out to 146 gigs NOT 160....Why is this?
When advertising a hard drive the manufacturer uses 1000 bytes as 1 GIG. In reality 1 GIG is 1024 so your 160 GIG hard drive should be read by your system as 156.25. As far as the other approx 10 GIG's is probably a partition used by the notebook manufacturer for a restore partition. Therefore your 160 will only register as 146. VISTA takes up a lot of space and memory.
