Using external HDD for primary notebook driver?
Ok...
So I want to be able to have a seperate hard drive that I can use to boot up my computer when I am using it to scan others hard-drives or doing other duties like data recovery.
I would just get an IDE to USB cable but I dont think It will let me boot up my notebook because when I connect using that it comes up as a removable media storage device.
So I want to be able to buy a HD that is used for a desktop and use some type of converter cable that will connect it to my laptop main drive slot, is this possible, sorry if I confused you!
Because this is the way I want do to it. I have a massive amount of hard-drives from clients that had me upgrade theirs and were going to trash the extra one.
if you truly want to go with the external hard drive route, just get a "external hard drive enclosure" which you can plug any standard 3.5" desktop computer's hard drive into, then plug that into your computer with the usb cable provided - it'll turn up in my computer as a removable media disk?
i don't entirely understand what you're trying to do or why, but using the above method you can make use of a desktop hard drive as an external hard drive on a laptop.
if you wanted this external hard drive to have a bootable operating system on it, you would have to look in the bios setup of your laptop at the boot sequence section to see if it has the option of checking a usb external hard drive as well as the standard floppy disk/hard disk/cd drive options and move the external hard disk up the list so it is checked before your laptop's hard drive.
normally only fairly new machines have this functionality to boot from flash drives and usb devices built into the bios though.
